Living in extreme situations
The Great Walser Valley can officially call itself a biosphere park, which indicates a high quality of life. For centuries, however, the population had to solve manifold problems in order to exist at all. The inhabitants are still exposed to geographical, economic and social extremes that differ from other regions. This interesting field of tension, from the settlement of the valley to the present, is the subject of an exhibition and themed tour in the Museum Großes Walsertal.
The imposing semi-detached house in the heart of Sonntag is itself a piece of history. Over the centuries, the building has served as a home, alpine dairy, bakery and inn. Since 1981, the house has housed a museum. Today, the museum building including the stable is owned by the communities of the valley. The Heimatpflegeverein Großes Walsertal is responsible for running the museum with special exhibitions and an educational programme.
