Basking in the light of Lake Constance, the Bregenz Art Gallery (Kunsthaus) is Vorarlberg’s modern art Mecca. On account of its ambitious exhibition programme and its unique architecture the Kunsthaus has gained an international reputation among art and architecture aficionados.
The Vorarlberg regional authorities commissioned the Swiss architect Peter Zumthor to design the gallery, which was built between 1990 and 1997. In 1998 the building won Peter Zumthor the Mies van der Rohe Award for European Architecture, and in 2009 he was awarded the Pritzker Prize, the ultimate distinction in the world of architecture.
