Commemorating the local Jewish community and their wide-reaching contribution to the development of Vorarlberg and surrounding areas, the Jewish Museum in Hohenems is a regional museum with international flair, evocatively recalling the exemplary history of the Diaspora.
It also looks at aspects of the Jewish presence in Europe and deals with questions on the subject of co-existence and migration. It encompasses the final days of the Jewish community in Hohenems, marked by the local history of Nazism, anti-semitism, eviction and deportation.
Changing axis from local to world history, the museum portrays the experiences and life stories of the Jewish families from Hohenems, and endeavours to further relationships between their descendants throughout the world.
The museum organises special exhibitions annually, and also offers a comprehensive programme of events.
The permanent exhibition in the Villa Heimann-Rosenthal, a house dating back to 1864, documents the history of the Jewish community living in Hohenems up until their annihilation in the Nazi era. It also covers the beginnings of the post-war period and the history of the Hohenems diaspora.
Modern audio guides and video displays in German, English and French recount individual experiences set against the European historical background of migration, cross-border relations and networking. Youngsters aged 6 and over can participate in a special children’s show, enhanced by stories by Monika Helfer and silhouettes by Barbara Steinitz.
