Description & Infos

The symbol of the city of Bregenz, the Martin’s Tower offers not only fabulous panoramic views of the mountains, town and lake but also, thanks to the historical exhibition it contains, a deep insight into the city’s fascinating history.

Martin’s Tower and Martin’s Chapel

The huge impact exerted by the Martin’s Tower today is largely due to its impressive Baroque onion dome. When the city was founded in 1250, the space was occupied by a warehouse with a pyramid roof even higher than the city wall. The year 1362 saw the dedication of the Martin’s Chapel which, in the years that followed, was richly decorated with magnificent frescos.

From 1599 and 1601 the architect Benedetto Prato from Roveredo (Grisons) working on behalf of the city, added an extra mezzanine floor (now the exhibition rooms), a residential storey for the tower overseer and the arcade level. The warehouse had become a tower. From then on the Martin’s Tower served as a vantage point for guarding the city of Bregenz.

Over the centuries the tower overseer carried out his duties there, namely, to raise the alarm in the case of fire in the city.
