Description & Infos

Using plans, models, photos and documents, “Rhein-Schauen” in Lustenau has been illustrating the local history of this section of the Rhine, forming the border between Vorarlberg and Switzerland before flowing into Lake Constance, for over 25 years.

Following the signing of the Swiss-Austrian National Treaty in 1892, the International Rhine Regulation (IRR) began with the building of flood protection barriers along the Alpenrhein between the mouth of the River Ill and Lake Constance. Until a few years ago some 600 tons of stone was transported daily by private service railway from the Kadelberg quarry in Mäder/Koblach to the loading stations and stone depots on Lake Constance.

The Rhine Railway: theme days and events

Pulled by a historical 1940s electric engine, or a steam locomotive dating back to 1910 or 1920, you can take a train ride through the fabulous and varied countryside of the Lake Constance Nature Reserve. On certain days you can even set off from Lustenau and continue along the Rhine to the Swiss border at Wiesenrain; crossing the historical Rhine “Habsburg” Bridge you reach Widnau, and the operations centre of the International Rhine Regulation.
