The unbridled force of nature in a delightful setting
You don’t have to travel to the USA to see roaring waterfalls: the Rhine Falls in Switzerland are a lot nearer, and every bit as impressive. Europe’s largest waterfall is 150 metres wide and, as it leaves Lake Constance, the water falls 23 metres into the abyss.
To access the viewing platform, situated directly above the river, visitors have to negotiate quite a few steps. From a boat the huge wall of water is even more impressive. As well as round trips and ferry crossings, tours to the so-called “Rock” are on offer: a steep-sided crag towering out of the water, which can also be climbed by the intrepid.
The Rhine Falls are especially impressive in the evening, when the river and its surroundings are bathed in an amazing light. The trip makes a perfect family outing.
