Description & Infos

Daniel Swarovski, who founded his cut crystal company in Wattens, Tyrol, in 1895, had the vision from the very beginning to regard crystal not only as a material, but also as an inspiration. In this spirit, the Swarovski Crystal Worlds opened in 1995, on the occasion of Swarovski's centenary - as a tribute to customers and crystal fans, to whom they continue to give moments of amazement to this day. Originally conceived by multimedia artist André Heller, famous names from the worlds of art and design have each interpreted crystal in their own way. They have turned the sparkling material into spatial and experiential concepts which, after several redesigns and extensions, now cover more than 7.5 hectares. Throughout the year, they offer visitors of all ages exciting impressions both inside and out, with specially created fragrances that turn a visit into an experience for all the senses. The Swarovski Crystal Worlds have become world-famous, also due to their unique appearance, the head of the "giant" visible from afar. With over 15 million guests, this magical place is therefore also one of the most popular sights in the whole of Austria.

The Chambers of Wonder

The original principle of the Chambers of Wonder, which unfold underground and are entered through the giant's head, is based on the historical Wunderkammer in Innsbruck's Ambras Castle. In the 16th century, as a universal collection, it attempted to capture all the knowledge of its time. The Swarovski Crystal Worlds tie in with this. The basic idea is that every artist and every designer can tell a different story with Swarovski crystal. Big names such as Manish Arora, Tord Boontje, Lee Bul, Brian Eno, André Heller, Yayoi Kusama, Arik Levy, Fernando Romero and Studio Job have each designed a Wunderkammer with crystal according to their very own inspirations, so that with each new room one is immersed in a completely new world and encounters the artists who gave the ideas on a very personal level. Carla Rumler, Cultural Director Swarovski and Curator Swarovski Crystal Worlds, is responsible for the curation and artistic direction of the entire area.
