The Great Walser Valley can officially call itself a biosphere park, which indicates a high quality of life. For centuries, however, the population had to solve manifold problems in order to exist at all.

The Vorarlberg Regional Museum – now known as the Vorarlberg Museum – was founded in 1857, making it one of the oldest museums in the Lake Constance area. Its collections are based on specifically Vorarlberg-orientated themes, whilst retaining national and international links where relevant.

This museum is dedicated to Vorarlberg’s best known writer and poet who lived in the 19th century.

The museum, which is housed in a typical Bregenzerwald farmhouse from the 18th century, provides insights into the living style and circumstances in a region that continues to be characterised by timber architecture.

The open-air museum Villa Rustica, near the town of Rankweil, consists of three buildings of an ancient Roman farming estate, inhabited from the first to the fifth centuries A.D.
